Oberhofer - “o0O0o0Oo”

Is it just me or do young people in guitar bands get a lot of flack for all sounding the same? Maybe somewhere along the line so many people took in so much misguided rhetoric about certain artists being ‘innovators’ or ‘pioneers’ or ‘outsider heroes’ or whatever that we’ve all just started to believe anything not totally novel and fresh doesn’t deserve our precious attention. I realize that’s a slippery slope, but is it really so surprising that people growing up in similar circumstances with similar experiences would end up gravitating toward similar expressions? Expectations are high all around, and on “o0O0o0Oo” Brad Oberhofer stumbles along the best he can in spite of them. It’s a hot summer in the city, there are no jobs to be had, and yeah, his girlfriend situation doesn’t seem to be working out. I’ve always read that silly, emoticon-ish title and the hook it stands for as his banner of protest, a small measure of defense against what amounts to a handful of sympathetic—if predictable—first world problems. “You wish you could account for every inch and every ounce of everything that’s unique,” he sings. Sound like anyone you know?
