I hate like 95% of all Christmas songs. Can’t stand ‘em. Until now I believed it was just because they’re always so sentimental (or nonsensical—a reindeer with a glowing red nose?!) and maddeningly repeated. I mean, they were one-dimensionally unrealistic by design. I’m not asking for gritty street-level holiday songs or anything, but nothing on this chart ever felt the way actual Christmas felt to me. Now, though, I’m having a Simon Reynolds moment and realizing that it might just be an embodiment of retro. Maybe the reason I can’t stand Christmas music is because I’m being handed the twinkling, soft-focus memories of a childhood that never belonged to me. *[Strangely, I don’t seem to apply this to movies, because I will watch A Christmas Story ‘til my eyes bleed.]
