Handsome Furs - “When I Get Back”

Not to put too fine a point on it, but nothing’s really been the same since Apologies to the Queen Mary. Together, the members of Wolf Parade tried with mixed results to recapture the ineffable spark of their first record, while apart they’ve worked to redefine and transcend their own limitations (with the ostensible halt of Sunset Rubdown, Spencer Krug does seem in a bit of a creative funk at the moment). “When I Get Back,” then, is the sound of Dan Boeckner finally breaking through his own glass ceiling. Though he and wife Alexei Perry have been cranking out grimy industrial-Springsteen jams for a few years now, this is the first time that Handsome Furs have sounded joyously self-possessed, like they’ve realized they don’t owe anybody anything and are free to make the music they want. What comes out is a dancefloor burner that shelves the crunchy guitars in favor of big, fat synthesizers, hammering out an anthem for raised fists and newfound resolve. “Oh my heart it was in trouble, but it will be changed,” Boeckner sings, “I won’t feel it anymore.” Thankfully, I don’t think he does.
