The Big Music

tomewing:

New Poptimist! About Coldplay, epic rock, religion, half-remembered bits from my English A-Level, etc etc.

The notion of rock ‘n roll as secularized gospel music goes back to its very roots (Elvis learning to sing in church, Little Richard copping the stage theatrics of southern preachers, etc.). But Tom’s issue with ‘Big Music’—that it suggests and/or aspires to the kind of transcendent/transformative experience that songs of faith often do, but with a certain hollowness of pure gesturing—is one of the big reasons I feel wary of being duped by the new M83 album. I will now have to incorporate/reference his thoughts on such music into my own screed so it doesn’t seem like I ripped him off.
